Changes Coming to Player Placement

Transition to Grade-Year Age Grouping

At Greater Firelands FC, our focus has always been on doing what’s best for our players both on and off the field. As we continue to grow and align with the broader soccer landscape, we are transitioning back to grade-year age grouping.

This change allows us to better serve our athletes socially, developmentally, and competitively—while staying consistent with national standards.

What’s Changing

  • A New Seasonal Age Calendar
Teams will now be formed using a soccer year that runs
August 1 through July 31. This aligns more closely with the academic calendar and creates a smoother experience for families.
  • Alignment with National Organizations
Our age groups will match those used by major governing bodies like U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO. This ensures consistency across leagues, tournaments, and registration systems—making participation more seamless for everyone.
  • Keeping Players with Their Classmates
We know how important friendships and social development are. If a player falls outside the traditional cutoff, we will make every effort to place them with their
    current school grade whenever possible.
  • Club-Wide Teams at Older Ages
    Beginning at
U13, top teams will continue to be formed using players from across the entire club. This allows athletes who are ready for higher levels of play to train and compete together in a more challenging environment.

What’s Staying the Same

  • Our Commitment to Player Development
Everything we do is centered around helping players grow—building confidence, developing skills, and fostering a lifelong love of the game.
  • High Expectations & Strong Coaching
Our standards for training, competition, and team culture remain as strong as ever. Players can expect the same level of quality and commitment from our coaching staff.
  • Flexible Rosters
Player movement between teams may still occur when it benefits development or supports team needs. This flexibility helps ensure every athlete is in the best possible environment to succeed.
  • Open Communication
We are committed to keeping families informed every step of the way. You can expect clear communication and transparency throughout this transition.

Moving Forward, Together

This transition is about more than just age groups—it’s about creating the best possible experience for our players. By aligning with national standards while keeping our community-first approach, we’re building an environment where every athlete can thrive.

Stronger together. Greater forever.
