Transition to Grade-Year Age Grouping

At Greater Firelands FC, our focus has always been on doing what’s best for our players both on and off the field. As we continue to grow and align with the broader soccer landscape, we are transitioning back to grade-year age grouping.

This change allows us to better serve our athletes socially, developmentally, and competitively—while staying consistent with national standards.

What’s Changing

A New Seasonal Age Calendar
Teams will now be formed using a soccer year that runs August 1 through July 31 . This aligns more closely with the academic calendar and creates a smoother experience for families.
Alignment with National Organizations
Our age groups will match those used by major governing bodies like U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO. This ensures consistency across leagues, tournaments, and registration systems—making participation more seamless for everyone.
Keeping Players with Their Classmates
We know how important friendships and social development are. If a player falls outside the traditional cutoff, we will make every effort to place them with their current school grade whenever possible.
Club-Wide Teams at Older Ages
Beginning at U13, top teams will continue to be formed using players from across the entire club. This allows athletes who are ready for higher levels of play to train and compete together in a more challenging environment.

Greater Firelands and Firelands United are joining forces to create an unprecedented pathway for soccer players across Northern Ohio. Both organizations share a common vision: building a sustainable local soccer system that keeps talent, opportunity, and passion right here in the Firelands region.

Firelands United has long aimed to provide local players opportunities to reach higher levels without leaving the area. Greater Firelands has a proven track record of developing youth players and supporting families who care deeply about the game. With club tryouts around the corner, we sat down with Nico Samaniego , CEO of Greater Firelands Soccer Association, to talk about what sets the club apart and how it helps players reach their full potential.

Q: Nico, what makes Greater Firelands different from other regional clubs?
Nico: “Our focus is on individualized player pathways. Every player — no matter their age or ability — gets a clear development plan. We want players to grow at their own pace, whether they aim to play recreationally, make high school varsity teams, or pursue college and beyond. Everything we do is shaped around that.”

Q: Can you explain what you mean by individualized player pathways?
Nico: “We start by assessing a player’s technical skills, athletic profile, and personal goals. From there, we create a plan that includes targeted training sessions, position-specific coaching, strength and conditioning where needed, and competitive play that matches their current level. Communication between coaches, players, and families is built into every plan to make sure everyone is aligned.”

Q: How do you ensure players compete at the right level?
Nico: “We place teams into leagues and divisions that match both their ability and aspirations. Playing too easy or too hard can hinder growth. We make adjustments as needed so every player experiences the right challenge.”

Q: Greater Firelands is known for offering the highest level of competitive play in the region. How does that work?
Nico: “We work across three main leagues:

OHTSL (Ohio Travel Soccer League): A strong regional league for U09–U15 travel and community teams, offering competitive local play.
CASA (Central Alliance Soccer Association): Year-round play with competitive divisions to develop higher levels of competition.
NPL (National Premier Leagues, US Club Soccer): Elite national-level competition designed for high-performance teams seeking consistent, top-level exposure.

We make sure each team and player competes in the league that best supports their growth — whether that’s OHTSL, CASA, or NPL.”

Q: Club culture is a big part of your mission. Can you describe it?
Nico: “Our culture is built on three pillars:

Player-first development: Coaching decisions prioritize long-term growth, not short-term wins.
Positive, accountable environment: Players, families, and coaches model sportsmanship and a growth mindset.
Accessibility and affordability: Great soccer should be reachable. Scholarships, fundraising, and tiered programming help families access our programs without financial stress.”

Q: How does Greater Firelands balance quality and affordability?
Nico: “We use tiered programming so families can select the level that fits their goals and budget. We also negotiate league placements and travel schedules to maximize competitive experience while keeping costs reasonable. Scholarships and fundraising support ensure no player is left out.”

Q: Who should come to tryouts this year?
Nico: “Any player who wants to improve, be challenged appropriately, and be part of a club that values them as a person — not just a number. We’ll meet players where they are and help them move forward.”

Greater Firelands Night at Norwalk Soccer

On Monday night, our soccer community came together for something truly special: Greater Firelands Night at the Norwalk varsity soccer games. It was an evening filled with energy, pride, and connection that showed how powerful the game of soccer can be when it brings people together.

The evening began with kids from both our club and recreational programs joining the varsity athletes on the field for the player walkouts. For many of these young players, it was their first chance to step under the lights and experience the excitement of varsity game day. Smiles and wide eyes told the story of how meaningful that moment was.

At halftime, the fun continued with opportunities for our youth players to play on the field while families cheered them on from the stands. These moments created lasting memories and planted seeds of inspiration for the next generation of soccer players in Greater Firelands.

The varsity action did not disappoint either. The Norwalk Truckers took the field in two exciting matchups that had fans engaged from start to finish. The passion and energy from the players and crowd made the night unforgettable.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Norwalk soccer coaches for extending the invitation and to the Norwalk administration for supporting this event. Their efforts helped create a memorable night for our soccer community.

Greater Firelands Night was a clear reminder of why we invest in our programs and our players. Together we are building a strong, connected soccer community where every player has the chance to grow, compete, and dream big.

This season, Greater Firelands Soccer Association is proud to announce a new partnership with the New London Soccer Club , expanding recreational soccer opportunities for youth in the New London community.

Q: Heather, how do you feel about this new partnership with the New London Soccer Club?
A: I couldn’t be more excited! Partnering with New London opens another door for kids to experience the fun and benefits of recreational soccer. Our mission has always been to make the game accessible for as many families as possible, and this partnership is a big step in that direction.

Q: What does this mean for the New London community?
A: It means more opportunities. Kids will now have the chance to join a program that emphasizes development, teamwork, and sportsmanship, while still keeping the fun and family-centered feel that recreational soccer is all about. We’re thrilled to support New London families and give their athletes a place to play and grow.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?
A: Honestly, seeing the new players in action! I love watching kids discover their confidence and passion for soccer. It’s always special when we can welcome a new community into our programs, and I can’t wait to see the New London athletes out there competing and smiling this fall.

Off-Season Advice from Coach Chris

Summer break is here, but that doesn’t mean your soccer game should take a vacation too. For Greater Firelands Soccer players, the off-season is the perfect time to grow your skills, build endurance, and fall even deeper in love with the game. We sat down with Coach Chris to talk about how to keep improving all summer long and how to have fun while doing it.

What’s one of the best ways players can keep improving in the off-season?
Coach Chris: Small-sided games like 3v3 are great. These fast-paced games push players to be creative, improve conditioning, and sharpen technical skills like passing and ball control. Grab a few teammates or siblings and head to the park. Remember it doesn’t have to be formal to make an impact.

Any tips for solo skill-building?
Coach Chris: Absolutely! Juggling challenges, footskill games, and obstacle courses are all fun ways to stay sharp. These kinds of challenges not only help improve foot-eye coordination, but they also build a competitive spirit. You can even make it a group effort by keeping track your progress and encouraging each other to beat personal records.

How can players stay active when on vacation or traveling?
Coach Chris: Get creative! Take a ball to the beach and try dribbling across the sand— trust me it’s great for balance and endurance. Play soccer tennis in the yard, or organize a game of kickball with friends. It doesn’t have to feel like training to help you grow.

What mindset should players have when training during the summer?
Coach Chris: Work ethic is everything. If you stay consistent, your mind and body will start to develop muscle memory, and you’ll keep progressing. Training every day (even if it’s just 15 minutes) adds up. And if you’re doing something fun, it doesn’t feel like work at all.

Any final words of encouragement for our Greater Firelands players?
Coach Chris: It’s all about the love of the game. Get others involved! Grab your friends, siblings, even someone new who wants to give soccer a try. Building relationships with people who enjoy training can help you stay motivated and grow faster as a player.

HCYSC Edge Rebrands as Greater Firelands

New Name, Same Commitment to Player Development and Community Growth

The Huron County Youth Soccer Club (HCYSC) and Edge FC are proud to announce an exciting new chapter in its legacy of youth soccer excellence: the official launch of its rebranded organization, Greater Firelands Soccer Association (GFSA) . This change marks a strategic evolution that reflects our growing presence across the Firelands region, our unwavering commitment to developing players both on and off the field and the increasingly new opportunities we are providing players in the region through our player pathway model.

Anthony Lane, Chief Operating Officer for GFSA, notes “This rebrand represents the professional membership experience we strive for. Providing significantly more affordable programming while delivering high level competitive opportunities”

The rebrand unites all club activities, including recreational leagues, competitive club teams, and player development initiatives, under one cohesive identity. Greater Firelands Soccer Association will serve as a central hub for youth soccer, offering programming for ages 3 to 18 that emphasizes skill-building, sportsmanship, and community connection.
